Bridging Baltimore and Havana: A Fusion of Creativity

Baltimore and Havana, despite their geographical and linguistic distance, share a profound similarity—they are both hubs of creativity and resilience. In these cities, diversity thrives, and amidst the challenges of daily life, art flourishes as a beacon of hope.

The essence of our cities can be found in the most unexpected places—the crumbling facades of buildings, the resilience etched into the faces of our people. It’s within these struggles that creativity blossoms, illuminating our communities with a sense of possibility and renewal.

Yet, to nurture creativity, we must venture beyond our familiar surroundings. Travel becomes a catalyst for inspiration, shaking us from complacency and offering fresh perspectives. Through my experiences leading tours, I’ve witnessed firsthand how exposure to new environments ignites creativity in others.

A recent trip to Cuba exemplified this transformative power. Joined by a group of fellow creatives from Baltimore, including the remarkable Reagan, we embarked on a journey that sparked a symphony of ideas. Reagan, a scientist turned artist, exemplified the fusion of innovation and vibrancy found in both our cities.

Our travels took us to Pinar del Rio, where we immersed ourselves in the lush landscapes and vibrant culture. Witnessing the dedication of farmers toiling in the fields, their weathered faces telling stories of resilience, left an indelible mark on us all.

As our journey drew to a close, we found ourselves profoundly changed. Greg, another member of our group, encapsulated the sentiment shared by many—Cuba had reignited our passion for life. We pledged to carry this newfound spirit with us, drawing upon our experiences to fuel our creative endeavors back home.

Months later, at a reunion inspired by our shared adventure, Reagan unveiled a striking collage merging images of Baltimore and Cuba. In this artwork, she captured the essence of our two cities, weaving together narratives of resilience and creativity.

Through art, we transcend language and cultural barriers, forging connections that bridge continents. May our partnership between Baltimore and Havana continue to flourish, fueled by the boundless creativity that unites us all.

You Can Take the Kid Outta Cuba but You Can’t Take the Cuba Outta of the Kid!

In the heart of the Caribbean, where the rhythm of life beats to the tune of salsa and the air is thick with history, lies Havana, a city that has captivated hearts for centuries. For my family, Havana held a special place in our hearts, albeit from a distance, until 2014 when everything changed.

My family’s connection to Havana dates back to the 1960s when they left the island amidst political upheaval, vowing never to return. However, fate had other plans. In 2014, we embarked on a journey that would not only redefine our relationship with the People of Cuba, but also ignite a passion for exploration and discovery that had long lain dormant.

At the helm of this transformation was my father, a man whose love for Cuba never wavered despite the distance and time. As we set foot on the cobbled streets of Havana, I watched as his eyes lit up with a mixture of nostalgia and wonder. It was as though time had stood still for him, preserving the memories of a bygone era in vivid detail.

With each step, my father breathed life into the streets, recounting tales of his youth with an infectious enthusiasm. He remembered every corner, every business, and even the bus routes with an uncanny clarity that left us in awe. It was as though he had been transported back in time, guiding us through the maze of alleyways and hidden gems that make up the real old Havana.

But it wasn’t just the landmarks that fascinated us; it was the people—the soul of Havana—who truly captured our hearts. My father’s stories brought to life the vibrant characters who inhabit the city, from the street vendors with their colorful wares to the musicians who fill the air with melodies that seem to dance on the breeze.

In our journeys over the last 10 years, we have had the privilege of meeting countless individuals who have been inspired by my father’s stories. Among them is my amazing, creative business partner, whose passion for creating memorable experiences matches my father’s own. Together, we have worked tirelessly to make the magic happen on the ground, turning dreams into reality and breathing new life into the streets of Havana.

My father looks to him as his own, passing on his stories so that those who experience Cuba can see not only what it was but also what it can become—a city filled with new hope and creative energy despite its isolationist history. Together, they embody the spirit of resilience and innovation that defines Havana, turning challenges into opportunities and paving the way for a hopeful and brighter future.

In Havana, time may stand still, but the spirit of adventure is alive and well, waiting to be discovered by those brave enough to seek it. And for my family, that journey began with a single step, guided by the unwavering love of a father and the timeless allure of a city that will forever hold a piece of our hearts.
